Ramp and Sled Test
Since the lesson already touches on how workers used ramps and sleds, and possibly water poured on sand, to move stone blocks, this is an easy one to turn into a mini experiment. Use a heavy book or block as the "stone," a piece of cardboard as the "sled," and a ramp made from a board or stack of books. Have your learner try pulling the sled up the ramp dry, then try it again after wetting the surface underneath, and talk about which was easier and why. It gives them a hands-on feel for a problem the ancient Egyptians actually had to solve.
Pay the Worker
One of the week's key ideas is that pyramid workers were likely paid and fed rather than enslaved, you could set up a simple pretend job for your learner, like stacking blocks or carrying "stones" (books or boxes) a short distance, and pay them in bread, dates, or another simple snack when the task is done, since that's closer to how workers were actually compensated. Afterward, ask how it felt to work for pay versus just being told to do it. This connects directly to discussion question two in the lesson, about whether learning workers were paid changes how kids think about the pyramids.
Build a Pyramid
Give your learner a stack of sugar cubes, mini blocks, or even stacked cardboard squares, and have them build their own pyramid from the base up, starting wide and getting smaller toward the top. Before they start, remind them of the vocabulary word from this week, a pyramid is a large structure with a square base and triangular sides, and see if they can build to match that shape without you telling them how. If you want to push it further, have them try building it a second time using only one size of block versus a mix of larger blocks on the bottom and smaller ones near the top, and ask which version felt more stable. It's a hands-on way to make the shape and structure of a pyramid click, rather than just something they saw in a picture.
Investigate Levels and Plumb Bobs
Ancient Egyptian builders used simple tools called plumb bobs, a weight tied to a string, to check that walls and edges were perfectly straight up and down, and a related A-frame tool with a hanging plumb line to check that surfaces were level, both of which mattered enormously when you're trying to build something as large and precise as a pyramid. Have your learner make their own plumb bob by tying a small weight (a washer, a fishing weight, even a few paperclips) to a piece of string, then hold it up against the corner of a wall, a door frame, or a piece of furniture to see whether that edge is truly straight. You can extend it by building a simple A-frame level out of two sticks and a crossbar with a plumb line hanging down the middle, then testing it on a table or the floor. It's a good way to show that pyramid builders weren't guessing by eye, they had real tools for accuracy, long before anything electronic existed.
