Optional Activities
- Family History Interview: Talk to a parent, grandparent, or another adult about something that happened when they were a child. Draw or write one interesting thing you learned and compare it to your own life.
- Artifact Detective: Choose an everyday object from your home, such as a spoon, toy, or shoe. Pretend an archaeologist found it 500 years from now. Draw it and write or tell what they might guess it was used for.
- History Scavenger Hunt: Look around your house for objects from different times, such as baby pictures, old books, family keepsakes, or souvenirs. Arrange them from oldest to newest and talk about the story they tell.
- History Around Us Walk: Take a walk around your neighborhood or city and look for clues about the past, such as older buildings, monuments, street names, or historic markers. Talk about what these clues might tell us about the community's history.
- Time Capsule: Choose five small items or draw pictures of things that represent your life today. Place them in an envelope or box and write a note explaining why you chose each item. Decide when you would like someone to open it in the future.
- Be an Archaeologist: Fill a small container with sand, rice, or shredded paper and hide a few safe objects inside. Carefully "excavate" them using a spoon or paintbrush, record what you find, and make observations before deciding what the objects tell you.
